RE: Backing Up Your Hard Drive!!!
Another hard drive is okay for the interim, but I would not call it solid as a rock, whether internal or external. It is just as suseptible to damage as the one you're actively working on. Having worked on computer magazines for 7 years and read a lot of info, and having a power outage late last year that took out my hard drive, and literally blew a visable hole in my modem card, spent $2,500 for a new drive and data retrieval, they are sensitive flimsy things. The only thing that would help here is one of those devices (can't remember what they are called) for a few hundred that keep your computer going on battery for a few minutes, so if there is some power failure you have time to shutdown. But, I wouldn't trust anything 100%. And that wouldn't save you from a drive that is about to wear out and die!
For finished work, I backup on CD.
For jobs that are in progress, I will quickly backup onto the very FAST writing Zip or Jazz disc, most evenings. They are so speedy and far quicker than CDs. I have a few of each as they will be recycled all the time, so once they have been bought, I'm not continually buying them. CDs are cheap for permanent backup.
THEN, once a job is complete and on CD for permanent storage, the rule as always published for years in any backup article you read, is MAKE ANOTHER COPY OF THE CD, and store it in a location away from your home. Eg. Your parents/friends house. This covers you in case of theft/fire/flood etc.
I've known this for years, yet wasn't prepared and I came a cropper with the power outage! Not to mention downtime for 6 weeks! On this subject, I think I can speak with some authority :-) Heather :-)
