Actually, Richard, there is an immense amount of room for customization in FWMX through the Appearance area of the Button Editor. You can apply custom textures, LiveEffects, backgrounds and fonts to the menus, create the styles in Freehand and import them in, save them and share them with the crew.

As discussed briefly on this list last week, making drop down menus with Dreamweaver and Fireworks MX is easy. I spent a good four hours working with the Project VII drop-down menu tutorial from Dreamweaver Magic on Thursday, and I almost got it working... (The drop downs worked fine every step of the way, until I started adding some content to the page, the tutorial's last step.... so I'm confident the problem would have been resolved with a little effort).
Anyway... I started playing with Fireworks MX on Friday, and accomplished basically the same thing in about 20 minutes. Amazingly simple, actually.
I can see a few problems with the Fireworks MX approach, as it doesn't allow for that much customization... But still, it's pretty slick.
Now, having said that, I'm not abandoning Project VII. There is lots of good work there, and I will always find inspiration from designers who can help me see the future with a little more clarity.
Cheers,
