RE: Q: What is DOM? (was Re: [OT] Safari
DOM = Document Object Model (yeah, like that helped)
The DOM provides a 'directory' of sorts of everything on the page and provides methods to get information from the page. It uses dot notation to represent parent to child relationships and property relationships. The DOM also stores collections of things on the page (like images for instance) for easy access and the DOM also deals with the CSS on the page. The reason a well working DOM for a browser is critical to most DHTML is that the DOM is the only way javascript can access the CSS layers and move, hide and show those layers on the page. It is also what is used to swap images and is used to access things on other frames of a web site. Without good DOM support, a browser's functionality is impared and it is less useful than a browser with good DOM support. =========Paul Davis http://www.kaosweaver.com/
