If you email him the pages, he will have no idea how to FTP the site himself. Contribute works by downloading a page from the remote site, the user makes changes and then the Publish button re-FTPs the new page to the site.
Complete the site .. or at least complete template pages so he can't mess with your design. Then you can make editable regions on the templates for the areas he can edit in Contribute and he will only be able to mess with those areas.
Check out the permission and user group settings in Contribute carefully. And familiarize yourself with the program yourself .. he will have questions that you will need to answer.
