sorry about talking to myself.... but in case someone else will benefit....
i didn't wait an hour.. i looked into the cache in library/ application support/ macromedia... and found a new file cg.dws (this is probably not a standard dw file but a site that i may have created when first getting dw to play & learn it)... the cache did not contain my non-dw sites.... i quit my 'locked in start-up dw8' and started it once more...: this time when it began to index all of the sites and pages on my hard drive.... i clicked on the 'stop' button... and it opened right up! this let me go to manage sites and select a real site... and i will just ignore the fact that dw thinks of my entire hard drive as 'cg'.
