Welcome to the world of MX 2004. I do know of several good classes on line for Dream Weaver and these are of no cost to you. They helped me in the beginning. Also, Macromedia's website contains a great deal of help and tutorials for all from novice to expert.
Here are a couple of URL's that might help:
http://www.hplearningcenter.com/?mcID=em10 http://graphicssoft.about.com/ (lots of classes here from PhotoShop, Web Design, XHTML, etc.) http://www.trainingtools.com/ http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/
As far as the background image, are you trying to add text over the top without putting in a table or something? I just began a site in Dream Weaver after making the front page mock up in PhotoShop. I have a blue-gray background, then added a gray-box in the middle as also a background image in the middle. I was adding text and graphics over the gray box, so I first had to add my table over the background image in order to be able to add the other items on the page. I hope that helps answer your question.
