Wow! What a fantastic response! Thanks to Stephanie, Brian, Phillipe, Ken, and Ali for responding to my question about empty alt tags.
All of your methods gave me something to work with. I had been adding the quotes in the alt field in Dreamweaver, then going in and removing the character entities from the source code one by one.
I need to add empty alt tags to a custom bullet. My understanding is that the 508 guidelines permit either giving them an alt tag like "bullet" or "check" (as mine are) or using the empty tag so that the screen reader doesn't keep reading those if they really aren't necessary.
I like Stephanie's letter solution combined with Ali's Find Replace.
I also downloaded the extension from the URL provided by Brian, and I got the tech note reference from Phillipe (I am definitely going to try this.)
Finally, yes, Ken, I am on a Mac and have BBEdit. I hadn't thought of that! It will work too.
This is the most wonderful and resourceful group. Many thanks again.
