I use free efax (www.efax.com), which only allows receiving (send to my email account) and the number not my area code. I could also receive voice message which could be open from Quicktime, Media player. When I first signed up the account and had the number printed on my business card, I was concerned people will ask why it is not toll-free or not the same area code as my tel number. I was thinking to change to my area code or toll-free (cost $9 a month) if there are more than 5 people ask. But none of my customer bother, including those who fax me often. There were few times I didn't received fax in my mailbox which supposed to come in. But it didn't really bother me, what's more can I ask since I use it for free? My solution is to tell my customers if they ever fax me and hear nothing from me after 2 days, they might as well call or email - thanks to their patience and understanding, this works fine.
Even though it is free, surprisingly I am not bombarded by the junk fax from the company or its affiliate. It has numbers for Europe and South Pacific as well. However, I have a feeling that in the near future the company will stop provide free fax number as now one can only find the 'free sign up' in the sitemap' page - last time I check was 3 months ago when I helped a friend to sign up. It also no longer comes with voice message service.
If anyone of you think of signing up for a free fax number. There is another company to choose from, which is www.j2.com. This one comes with voice message service.
