If you'd like to not see something, try making it invisible or adjusting its position to up above the menubar. This greatly decreases the work the computer will do in blending pixel values together multiple frames per second.
(For the "why" of it, monitor color depths differ. Particularly, monitors set to "thousands of colors" have only 1/256th of monitors set to other depths. When two arbitrary colors are blended together to aribtrary levels, the calculation could very well not fit in the monitor's current color display.)
