Re: OT: Asthma (was off-site backup)
Hi Patti, David, and other asthma sufferers:
Asthma runs in my family, though I don't have it, knock on wood. But I do want to tell you about my asthma experiences with my Mom, as I'm her caregiver. She has severe asthma. It a nutshell, we would end up in emergency about every two weeks, with her just this side of meeting her maker, turning blue, doctors huddled around, masks pumping oxygen and ventolin into her system, and whatever else they could conjure. Truth to tell, she's still around today only because we live less than five minutes from the Emergency Department. She took massive doses of oral steroids for years just to keep breathing; as a result she has severe osteoporosis, and breaks bones by coughing, has skin so thin that tears like paper, and weighs just 80 pounds (Believe it or not, that's actually been a huge victory for me... We've helped her gain weight over the last year after years of weight loss... she was down as low as 65 pounds a mere 18 months ago, after battling a rare cancer).
Anyway, I told you all that so I can tell you this! :-) We were able to get her asthma under control by buying an air purifier.... A serious, expensive one (about $800 Cdn) made by Austin Air (though I'm sure other companies make good ones, too). It's changed her life, and mine too. We haven't had a trip to emergency for asthma since. I can't recommend them highly enough; we run it on high during the day, and low while she is sleeping, and it's been magical. We've weaned her off oral steroids, and she now takes fewer asthma drugs. She has still been to emergency for breathing problems, but they're related to bouts of pneumonia and a deep chronic lung infection common to people with depressed immune systems...
Anyway... If your asthma problems are causing sleepless nights, have a look at an air purifier... :-)
Cheers,
Richard
