Open Terminal. At the % prompt, type FTP.
The promt will change to
ftp>
Type
open followed by the name of your FTP server
You will be prompted for your username and password (which will not display as you type it), and then you should be in.
You can type
man FTP
at the % prompt for more information (the manual).
When looking for this kind of information on Google, you will get better results if you do not include "Mac" or "OS X" in your search terms. Just search for something like "unix terminal FTP." Not much that is Mac-specific here.

Tip -- put square brackets [ ] around the OT in your subject line. DW tip -- if you're not already using the Fireworks Edit tools in the Property Inspector, they are worth a look.
