Danielle,
we were recently in the Poor Knight Islands in New Zealand, and on the way there, crossed the open ocean in an area fondly called "Shark Alley" by the locals. I couldn't believe all the sharks we saw all over the place as we crossed the waters.
The waters surrounding the Poor Knights are incredible. We went snorkelling and it was amazing. Jacques Cousteau rated it as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. You can't go on the Islands themselves, as they are considered as sacred burial ground of the Maoris because of a wholescale massacre that occurred there. There has never been a documented shark attack there, despite the large numbers of divers that frequent the area--perhaps because the fish populations there are so plentiful? My son saw a small shark when he was in the water

If you ever get a chance, go see it. You wouldn't be sorry.
