Diane,
I'll answer your question by taking a bit of a different route. Instead of concentrating on photos, I'll relate to you what I do with the DW List cartoons I create:
Generally, I make two sizes - a so-called "hi -res" version and one that's a lot smaller. I make the hi rez version for people that might have color printers and/or large monitors. Even though the artwork is still 72 dpi, many times you can still get a good print from the larger version of my cartoons - the only place where it is really noticeable is in the lettering of the balloons but if you download the art, then shrink it before printing, the 72 dpi hardly becomes an issue - unless any of them would go to print (which is why they are all saved at 72 dpi - that's a safe guard from anyone trying to "steal" my art and publish it as their own. If they want to try and push off a 72 dpi image in print as their own, I feel sorry for them).
But regardless of all that, I try very hard not to make my cartoons for the list any wider than 1200 pixels wide. For the most part, they are generally in the 800 pixel range because I'm still trying to be "web and monitor friendly". :-)
My "rule of thumb" is this: "if an image can fit comfortably on my 17" monitor, then chances are, it's going to fit comfortably in a large percentage of other people's monitors too".
I know that doesn't help you with the photographs, but thought it might be interesting to share how I deal with my cartoons as there tends to be a lot of airbrushing and blending effects on all of my colored creations.
:-)
-Chris
