Hi Richard, you're certainly right in trying to convince him to not take down his Web site. Search engines will drop their listing of his site if they visit it and find it unavailable, and certainly the small cost of keeping it going (especially if you move to a less expensive host) will be much less than the lost business he'll experience if he takes it down.
I don't know what he sells, but the combined lost business from current customers and potential customers, along with losing any momentum that exists, certainly calls for keeping the site up and running.
