It took a little work, but I just did a three-column layout with a fluid center column. So far it works in everything I've tested it with EXCEPT for MacIE5, but this is acceptable because (1.) Mac users make less than one percent of our site traffic (alas) and (2) I have laid out the pages in such a way that they degrades acceptably in MacIE (the obscured column has important but inessential information that can be obtained in other ways).
Obviously, Netscape 4 users have a much reduced experience (plain t ext on a white background) but have full access to the content.
If there's another important browser I've missed that chokes on these pages, I'd like to know about it. The pages are all within the following directory: http://www.bcr.com/training/ Let me know if you see any problems I've missed.
BTW: Many thanks to Al for his AutoLayers and SnapLayers extensions, and for the detailed tutorial on using them.
Now, if only I could figure out how to circumvent the three-pixek difference in layer placement between Netscape and IE (I suspect it's a difference over whether borders are placed inside or outside the box and how they are figured into the width of the box). Ultimately, I allowed the popup menu to overlap the constant menu by three pixels in IE rather than having a gap in Netscape
