DOM is the Document Object Model defined by the W3C that lays down the basic set of methods for accessing and manipulating document objects in any structured document - like a web page. It attempts to bring order to the chaos created by Netscape and Microsoft developing proprietary ways of rendering web pages. A proper understanding of the DOM is essential for creating cross-browser JavaScript and CSS, among many other things. It's already on Level 2, and DOM Level 3 is now being developed. Modern browsers seem to manage most, if not all, of Level 1, but support for Level 2 is patchy. When new browsers fail to live up to the standards of the DOM, web pages fall apart, and many heads are banged on computer keyboards. Not a pretty sight.
