re: shy design view (plus font tags, CSS, etc.)
Thanks to Suzanne Stephens and Ken Lanxner for taking so much time and effort to help me solve the problem of the missing design view. I greatly appreciate your trying the page out in BBEdit and eliminating all the errors it identified, deleting the table tags, changing the character set, eliminating some of the text (to test the memory theory), etc. You all were able to find the problems that were preventing the design display.
Ken raised another aspect: "If this same page had been designed using CSS, there would have been considerably less code (perhaps 35% less, just guessing) and I bet DW would have displayed it, even with the same amount of text. DW has to work its way through 'stuff' on the page, whether it is your text or endless <font> tags. :-)"
Well, yes, er uh (cough) my distribution of <font> tags does qualify as "endless." :) As a newbie I've been grabbing whatever's at hand in trying just to get the site up. What's been fascinating to me as I've started now to read about good web design, accessibility, etc., is how I somehow managed in so short a time and with such a relatively small-scale web site to incorporate virtually every "don't" imaginable: blending structure, presentation, and content as if it were a felony to separate them; using table tags, font tags, and all sorts of non-CSS language to try to get my text to "look right" on the page; putting up images without alt.text tags; forgetting about the needs of people who can't use a mouse or who can't see; and so on. I'm just now beginning to get a sense of what some of the basics of good, usable, accessible web design are all about. The dialogue on this list--although much of it is still way above my head--is tremendously helpful to me in this process and a great support for my work. Thanks!
Ken
